Restlessness

In Paradise Lost I’m fascinated by the idea of restlessness as the governing principle.

Satan is restless but he has this amazing aesthetic sense. He is the dark side of us all.

Adam is fascinated by knowledge, and wants to know how the solar system works. Dangerous knowledge. Unleash dangerous knowledge and you experience extraordinary epiphanies, and threats. The cost of knowledge is the fall.

On Earth one can still experience beauty. There are still fragile, beautiful and natural environments to see. Similarly, music can, fleetingly, give a sense of timelessness and beauty. But it is only meaningful in human ears if it is also subject to the darkness and dissonance of disorder and restlessness, because of our nature and what we have made.

Through music I explore sensing and shaping the world timelessly but with the paradox that music’s shapes and forms are timebound, ephemeral and invisible. How art can convey people’s experience of beauty, and simultaneously restlessness and destructiveness. Music is unique in expressing timelessness and yet is the most timebound artform.
