Recreation of the programme presented exactly 50 years ago by the University of Sussex Orchestra, on 8 December 1969. With conductor Laszlo Heltay, who was Director of Music at Sussex University, and a graduate of Franz Liszt Academy, where he studied with Kodaly. The piano soloist on that occasion was pianist Diana Okkalides, who was married to Prof Angus Ross, a co-founder of the English Department.

It was one of the very first concerts in the newly opened space of the Gardner Arts Centre (now the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts). 1969 was also the year in which the first students in the Department of Music were admitted to begin their studies in BA Music, a course which continues at Sussex to the present day.

The original programme notes were by Ian McEwan, then a student at the University of Sussex, and now a distinguished and best-selling author.
